Firefighters were called to the Champion Road depot about 2am.

The fire involved old rail carriages inside a 100m long timber-framed, iron clad shed at the Newport Rail Workshops.  

The building was one of three adjacent sheds where decommissioned rail cars and historic rolling stock were being stored.

On August 7 the Office of Rail Regulation informed Alliance Rail Holdings that it had decided to approve a 10-year track access contract between Network Rail and Great North Western Railway, an Alliance subsidiary which is planning to launch open access passenger services between London and Blackpool in early 2018. Competing with Virgin Trains West Coast, the new services would be operated with a fleet of four six-car Pendolino tilting trainsets to be procured by GNWR, with a maximum speed of 125 mile/h and traction characteristics ‘similar or better’ to rolling stock now using the West Coast Main Line, according to ORR.

ISRAEL: Bombardier is to supply 62 Traxx AC electric locomotives to Israel Railways under a contract announced by the railway on August 5. Valued at 1bn shekel, the deal includes an option for a further 32 locos.

ISRAEL: The first two of six GT26CW-2 diesel locomotives which are being built for Israel Railways by TZV Gredelj were unloaded at the port of Kishon near Haifa on August 5.

TZV Gredelj is subcontractor to US firm National Railway Equipment for the 50m shekel order, which was placed through CIC-Railway Equipment, the NRE agent in Israel and includes an option for up to six more.

Bendigo line train commuters have been told to get along and join forces to lobby for more V/Line trains. 

In a message that disregarded the value of Sunbury's Metro service, state opposition spokesperson Bernie Finn said there was a solution to the Sunbury trains dispute to satisfy both Macedon Ranges and Sunbury passengers.

Traffic conditions in Benalla are back to normal after a collision between a car and a city-bound V/Line train closed two roads on Thursday afternoon, but all services on the Albury railway line remain suspended.

A VicRoads spokesman said Winton-Benalla road and Nelson road were opened to traffic at 5.30pm.
